From 25 to 30 May 2008, the JRC Institute of Energy (IE) is hosting the 13th International Symposium on Reactor Dosimetry. About 110 participants from all over the world, from Korea and Japan to Argentina and the United States and of course many participants from Europe exchange recent information on the measuring and calculation of neutron and photon exposure in nuclear reactors. Neutrons and photons have an important influence on the degradation of reactor construction materials and therefore the life time of a nuclear power plant. Also an inventory is being made on the approach of neutron dosimetry in new generation power plants.

On Saturday 6 June the JRC’s Institute for Energy (IE), together with the Dutch Energy Research Centre (ECN) held an Open Day at the Petten Research Park in North Holland for more than 2000 enthusiastic visitors. The theme of the day was “Energy Research Today for Tomorrow's Energy”. The public enjoyed numerous demonstrations, games, quizzes and visits to the unique research facilities. A particular focus of the day was on practical experiments for children and energy - related games. Children could make their own solar panels, or take photos of insects with a magnification of 100,000 using an electron microscope.

The objective of this workshop is to impart knowledge about statistical evaluation of cylinder test data and their interpretation with respect to safety assessment. Essentials, which will be introduced and elaborated, are:

    - Influence of test parameters on test results including scatter from non-controlled test parameters

    - basics about degradation investigated by cycle and burst testing

    - basics of statistics and its use in evaluation of test data

    - basics of safety assessment by using statistics.
