    On 21-22 May 2015, the Council of Europe and the Regional Park of Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli, with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Environment of Italy and of the Tuscany Region, will hold a workshop to mark the 50th anniversary of the European 'Protected Areas in Europe' Diploma.

    The Italian Minister for Environment and other local authorities will participate. As part of the celebration, a tour of the park will be organised, including a visit to the JRC’s greenhouse gas flux monitoring station IT-SR2.

    The 2015 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Global Event, co-organised by DG DEVCO and the JRC at the JRC Ispra site in the context of EXPO Milan 2015, aims to raise awareness on IPC, present key scientific outputs, get feedback from policy makers on innovations for chronic food insecurity and nutrition classification, and showcase the link between IPC and decision-making.

    The 36th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE), organised by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in partnership with the International Center for Remote Sensing of Environment (Tucson, Arizona), will take place on May 11-15, 2015 in Berlin, Germany. The overall theme of the symposium is the use of Earth Observation systems and related Remote Sensing techniques for understanding and managing the Earth‘s environment and resources.

    This high level conference will be the official launch of a series of discussions that the EU Scientific Steering Committee for Expo will follow during the course of the six months of the Expo. It will set in motion a process which will lead to a set of recommendations for decision makers on future priorities for research, development and innovation in the food and agricultural sector. This process will also indicate how the recommendations can best be implemented both within the EU institutions and beyond after the EXPO.

    In 2014, the European regional branch of the UN Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM Europe) was set up. One of its main objectives is to build harmonised reference data for Europe, in order to contribute to sustainable development goals.


    The efforts of EU countries in the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive are a useful starting point for setting out to achieve the UNGGIM Europe objectives. However, EU legislation is not mandatory in Eastern European partnership countries, whose specificities need to be taken into account.

    The 2015 Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty will take place 23 – 27 March 2015 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington D.C., with the theme ‘Linking Land Tenure and Use for Shared Prosperity’.  The use of satellite imagery and geographic information systems has garnered special attention. Within the session on ‘Using geospatial data to improve land use and tenure’, JRC scientist Alan Belward will present a paper describing the role of the EU’s Earth Observation programme Copernicus as a means of obtaining and distributing land use information.
