    The third plenary session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services' (IPBES) will be held from 12 to 17 January 2015, in Bonn, Germany.

    The IPBES was established in April 2012, as an independent intergovernmental body open to all member countries of the United Nations. It is the leading intergovernmental body for assessing the state of the planet's biodiversity, its ecosystems and the essential services they provide to society.

    The first Global Soil Biodiversity Conference, organised by the Global Soil Biodiversity Intitiative and the EcoFINDERS project team, will be held from 2-5 December 2014 at the Palais des Congres, Dijon, France.

    The Conference aims to synthesise and incorporate the scientific knowledge on the provision of vital ecosystem services by soil biodiversity into management and policy plans. It includes keynote speakers from all over the world, and will include sessions on:

    The Arctic Biodiversity Congress, organised by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group of the Arctic Council and the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet), aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Arctic biodiversity through dialogue among scientists, policy-makers, government officials, industry, civil society and indigenous peoples.

    The 7th annual Conference of the Ecosystem Services Partnership will be held in Costa Rica, from 8-12 September 2014.  The emphasis of this conference will be on the use of the ecosystem services concept at the local level, focussing on Latin America, and with a special emphasis on Costa Rica. The programme consists of a mix of plenary sessions, workshops, open topic sessions and special sessions, and several field trips will be orgnised to provide the opportunity to observe and discuss the practical application of ecosystem services.

    The workshop will focus on the expansion of the European Alien Species Information network (EASIN), especially by including offline databases that exist in institutes or national repositories and are not accessible to the scientific community. The workshop will address data standardization issues and protocols for sharing information.

    The symposium, Remote sensing for conservation: uses, prospects and challenges, is jointly organised by the Zoological Society of London, NASA Science and the  group on Remote Sensing for Biodiversity within the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) at DLR, LSFE. It will illustrate how integrative approaches allow a better ecological understanding of the mechanisms shaping current changes in biodiversity patterns, while triggering innovative approaches, new research directions in remote sensing science and the development of new remote sensing products.

    The 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity started today in Nagoya, Japan. At the two-week long meeting the international community, including the EU, will be striving to agree on a post-2010 policy framework for preserving biodiversity. Scientists from the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) are taking part in this event to present their findings on soil biodiversity as well as on forest fragmentation and green infrastructure. € 3.3 billion invested in Europe in R&D on low carbon technologies
