    An enlargement & integration workshop on cyclotron research and radio-labelled nanoparticles, as part of the yearly cyclotron networking workshops (with participation of approximately 15-20 relevant research institutions), is scheduled for 15-16 December 2009 at the JRC Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) in Ispra, Italy.

    An enlargement & integration workshop on 'Nanobiotechnology: protein-surface interaction' is scheduled for 2-4 December 2009 in Ispra and will gather around 80 scientists from 15 countries. Major issues related to protein surface interactions will be addressed: production, characterisation techniques, modelling and kinetics phenomena, and applications in detection and nanotoxicology.

    This symposium, co-organised by the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES), will provide extensive information about the emissions of scooters with 2-stroke engines, possibilities for reduction and perspectives of improvements by both technical and legislative participants. The newest results about (nano) particles research, toxicity, development of manufacturers and alternative powertrains will be presented by experts on these subjects. Knowing this information, authorities will be able to support the best technology, leading to different types of regulations and improvements in air quality for the globe.

    The theme of the 2009 AAAS Meeting is "Our Planet and Its Life: Origins and Futures" recognizes that 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. New understanding of the processes that fascinated Darwin continues to be the focus of intense research 150 years later.

    The 18th meeting of the EC-US Task Force on Biotechnology is hosted by the JRC Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP). The meeting has been preceded by a workshop on "Current status and potential developments of nanobiotechnology research" on 3-4 June in Ispra.
