    The first Global Soil Biodiversity Conference, organised by the Global Soil Biodiversity Intitiative and the EcoFINDERS project team, will be held from 2-5 December 2014 at the Palais des Congres, Dijon, France.

    The Conference aims to synthesise and incorporate the scientific knowledge on the provision of vital ecosystem services by soil biodiversity into management and policy plans. It includes keynote speakers from all over the world, and will include sessions on:

    Organised by ADEME (Direction villes et territoires durables (DVTD) - Service friches urbaines et sites pollués (SFUSP)), this meeting brings together the researchers and managers of contaminated sites to discuss the problem of pollution from industry and agriculture and present the progress made over the past five years.

    IES scientist Ana Paya Perez will present the progress made in the management of contaminated sites in Europe, and research projects related to this subject.

    The 20th Latin American Congress of Soil Science, be organised by the Latin American Soil Science Society (SLCS) and the Peruvian Soil Science Society (SPCS), will be held in Cuzco, Peru, from 9-15 November 2014. The Congress aims to be a platform for scientific and cultural exchanges between researchers, teachers, students, professionals and anyone interested in the conservation of soil and water in Latin America.


    The JRC plans to present the new Soil Atlas of Latin America at this event.

    On 22-24 July 2014 at FAO HQ in Rome, the Global Soil Partnership will convene its Second Plenary Assembly bringing all its partners together to discuss about crucial issues of the GSP implementation.
    This session is expected to be more technical oriented as it will focus on revising and endorsing the GSP Plans of Action, including the FAO's plan of action of the International Year of Soils and the World Soil Day in 2014 and 2015.

    The European Commission will host a high-level public conference on 'Land as a resource' in Brussels on 19 June 2014, with the objective of highlighting the importance of good land management to address European and global challenges, particularly in view of an increasing world population. It will also tackle the shortcomings of the current European land use model, including conflicting policy drivers.

    The conference will be opened by Janez Potočnik, Environment Commissioner, with a key-note speech by Lester E. Brown, Director of the Earth Policy Institute (Washington, D.C.).

    The World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS) has been held on a quadrennial basis since 1927 as a scientific meeting in the area of soil science. the 20th WCSS is expected to gather over 2 500 participants, from science and industry, from more than 100 countries around the world. A wide range of scientific programs and stimulating social activities will be organised under the theme, “Soils Embrace Life and Universe”. The JRC plans to have a stand at the congress.

    The World Landslide Forum 3 will be held in Beijing, China, June 2-6, 2014. It is jointly sponsored by Ministry of Land and Resources, the People's Republic of China (MLR, PRC) and the Global Promotion Committee of the International Programme on Landslides (IPL), organised by the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) and China Geological Survey (CGS).

    The 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity started today in Nagoya, Japan. At the two-week long meeting the international community, including the EU, will be striving to agree on a post-2010 policy framework for preserving biodiversity. Scientists from the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) are taking part in this event to present their findings on soil biodiversity as well as on forest fragmentation and green infrastructure. € 3.3 billion invested in Europe in R&D on low carbon technologies
