    The JRC is organising a training course on modelling in support of quantitative fisheries science and advice. 

    JRC fisheries modelling experts will introduce about 20 students from all over Europe to the use of the open-source Fisheries Library in R (FLR), and the Assessment for All (a4a) modelling framework, a software tool developed under the lead of the JRC, in collaboration with other eminent international fisheries science institutions.

    In 2005 the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO), together with the Oceanography Society (TOS), organised an International Ocean Research Conference to discuss the expected developments in marine sciences over the next decade. Now, almost ten years later, in light of the advances in ocean sciences and technologies and also after important science-policy developments, this new International Ocean Research Conference will discuss and plan the coming decade of international collaboration in marine sciences and technology.

    The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) in Rome will host the second international conference on the collection and interpretation of traditional and non-traditional fishery dependent data.

    Comprehensive and reliable fisheries data and information is needed to provide sound scientific advice, feeding into fisheries management and policy frameworks in order to ensure sustainability in the fisheries sector and future profitable exploitation of fish stocks.

    Over 300 researchers and policy makers are meeting at the conference 'EurOCEAN 2010: Grand challenges for marine research in the next decade' in Ostend on 12 and 13 October 2010 to outline the research and policy needs for the next decade. JRC scientists showcase their most recent activities and findings related to maritime and marine research.

    The 4th "Oceans fom Space" conference from 26 - 30 April 2010 - organised by the JRC, the European Space Agency (ESA), the US Office of Naval Research, Global (ONRG), the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - is gathering specialists and experts on remote sensing of the sea to address every facet of satellite oceanography, including missions, satellites, sensors, passive and active techniques, calibration and validation, algorithms and models. The emphasis of the symposium will be on the key information provided by satellites to promote a sustainable use of marine resources and to improve our knowledge of the role played by the oceans in regulating climate.
