This year’s Global Soil Week will highlight the importance of land and soil to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in this the United-Nations-designated International Year of Soils.

    In 2014, the European regional branch of the UN Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM Europe) was set up. One of its main objectives is to build harmonised reference data for Europe, in order to contribute to sustainable development goals.


    The efforts of EU countries in the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive are a useful starting point for setting out to achieve the UNGGIM Europe objectives. However, EU legislation is not mandatory in Eastern European partnership countries, whose specificities need to be taken into account.

    The duration of this two-month exercise will allow all participants from 22 National Air Quality Reference Laboratories from the EU Member States, Switzerland, Norway, Russia and Serbia to sample PM on filters during a wider range of pollution and meteorological periods.

    The 2015 Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty will take place 23 – 27 March 2015 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington D.C., with the theme ‘Linking Land Tenure and Use for Shared Prosperity’.  The use of satellite imagery and geographic information systems has garnered special attention. Within the session on ‘Using geospatial data to improve land use and tenure’, JRC scientist Alan Belward will present a paper describing the role of the EU’s Earth Observation programme Copernicus as a means of obtaining and distributing land use information.

    The workshop aims to bring together technical experts representing providers of reference data from enlargement and integration (E&I) countries which belong to the Danube region, and thus fall within the scope of the Danube Reference Data and Services Infrastructure (DRDSI). The DRDSI is an infrastructure that the JRC is establishing in order to facilitate access to reference data for macro-regional development.
