The design of energy policies requires the involvement of the citizens by means of appropriate information and negotiation mechanisms that make the decision-making more participative. The transition to low carbon economies entails diverse societal issues such as environment, risks, and sustainability. In all these fields there is an increasing demand for effective communication among policy-makers, industry, citizens and researchers in order to build up a solid and well supported policies.

ICAPP 2015 will address advances in nuclear power plants in a broad sense, not only covering technological progress in reactors and associated nuclear fuel cycles, but also extending to broader applications of nuclear power, such a cogeneration and hybridization with over low-carbon power sources to displace fossil fuels in applications beyond electricity generation in the housing, transportation and industry sectors.

The fundamental knowledge and the awareness gap which exists within many key policy areas is indeed a major barrier to the implementation of both EU policy, and technology. Although the importance of this issue is recognised, the investment of manpower and finances remains relatively small compared to the investments in technology development, which is often never implemented due to public discourse. Engaging the general public requires a better understanding and communication among the economic, political, social and scientific actors.

    1 Dec 2014

November/December 2014, 1.5 to 2 days, (exact date still to be defined)

The proposed workshop focuses on methods to characterise the mechanical properties of materials and components by experimental and numerical means.

  7. 25 Sep 2014
    26 Sep 2014

Ljubljana, Slovenia or Trieste, Italy, 2 days (exact place still to be defined)

The workshop will address the importance of developing a system to monitor the Human Resource Supply through Universities and the Need from Nuclear Stakeholders.

The aim of the workshop is to illustrate the importance of ICT in training and education, with special emphasis on tools developed by the JRC for the nuclear sector.

  9. 2 Jun 2014
    4 Jun 2014

This workshop, with a special focus on plasticity and creep at different length scales, addresses physics-based models at different length and time scales and associated experimental research to understand material properties.

  10. 22 Nov 2011

On 22 November the JRC Institute for Energy and Transport (IET) and the Dutch Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the High Flux Reactor (HFR) in Petten, and 50 years of research co-operation between the European Commission and the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, as well as Maxime Verhagen, the Vice Prime Minister of the Netherlands joined the event along with policy makers and researchers.
