    This high level conference will be the official launch of a series of discussions that the EU Scientific Steering Committee for Expo will follow during the course of the six months of the Expo. It will set in motion a process which will lead to a set of recommendations for decision makers on future priorities for research, development and innovation in the food and agricultural sector. This process will also indicate how the recommendations can best be implemented both within the EU institutions and beyond after the EXPO.

    ESOF 2014 will be a unique opportunity for leading scientists, young researchers, students, entrepreneurs, policymakers, journalists and the general public to discuss new discoveries and debate the direction that research is taking in all the sciences.

Many research centres and universities will reveal the fun side of their scientific work to the public with live scientific experiments, demonstrations and games.

    The theme of the 2009 AAAS Meeting is "Our Planet and Its Life: Origins and Futures" recognizes that 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. New understanding of the processes that fascinated Darwin continues to be the focus of intense research 150 years later.

    The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra will dedicate its annual Open Day (12/05/07) to the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. Laboratories will be open with hands-on activities for kids. Topical presentations will take place together with experiments and demonstrations.
