In the context of the United Nations conference on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro from 20 to 22 June 2012, the JRC has organised a side event dedicated to Natural Disaster Prevention and Crisis Management. The exhibition, taking place in the EU Pavillion on 20 and 21 June, demonstrates how the combined application of advances in Information and Communication Technologies and novel research in information analysis are helping to detect and monitor natural disasters around the globe as well as to analyse urbanisation related challenges in order to help to better target disaster risk reduction measures and to enhance disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
The exhibit focuses on:
- Enhancing early warning and alerting of natural disasters with specific contributions on global flood forecasting and monitoring, global wildfire information system and continental drought monitoring
- Enhancing the understanding of urban risk for disaster risk mitigation, with remote sensing techniques for mapping human settlements
