Today in Vienna, the JRC, together with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, is organising a high-level event dedicated to scientific support to the Danube Strategy.

The event, opened, among others, by Vladimír Šucha, Director-General of the JRC and Barbara Weitgruber, Director-General of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, has attracted 230 participants.

The aim of the event is to foster synergies in economic, environmental and social issues, and in this way provide opportunities for further cooperation of various actors involved in the development of the Danube Region. The participants will also take stock of the progress achieved so far. During the interactive lunch session, JRC scientific support will be presented: the Danube Reference Data and Services Infrastructure that facilitates access to and the exchange of harmonised quality-documented data and services across multiple domains including water, soil, biodiversity, energy and land use; the Danube Water Nexus that addresses the water challenges identified by the EU Blueprint to Safeguard Europe’s Water Resources within the Danube Region; and the Danube Bioenergy Nexus that looks at how to  meet the challenges related to bioenergy production in the Danube Region.

Parallel round tables in the afternoon will offer the opportunity to present the progress accomplished in the frame of the JRC flagship clusters and horizontal activities and to enable discussion between scientists and policy makers. A subsequent panel discussion with the Ministers of Science and Research of the Danube Region will further fine-tune the clusters to the needs of decision-makers for more evidence-based policy making.

The event is organised back to back with the 3rd Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. It was preceded by a series of technical workshops on the JRC flagship clusters and horizontal activities.

Launched in June 2011, the EU Strategy for the Danube Region aims to boost the development of the Danube Region. Following that, the JRC launched the initiative "Scientific Support to the Danube Strategy" aiming to address the scientific needs related to the implementation of the strategy and to strengthen scientific cooperation in the Danube Region.
