“Regional Experts Meeting on Non-proliferation Nuclear Forensics” held in Hanoi 3-5 June 2014.
The European Commission Joint Research Centre, Institute for Transuranium Elements (JRC-ITU) and the United States Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration (US DOE NNSA) jointly organized a “Regional Experts Meeting on Non-proliferation Nuclear Forensics “on enhancing nuclear forensic capabilities in the South East Asian region.”
The workshop was co-sponsored by NNSA and through “Project 30” of the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence. 26 Experts participated in the Workshop, thereof 15 participants from 8 ASEAN countries, and lecturers from JRC-ITU, US DOE, IAEA, Australia, China, Japan, and Singapore. It focused on the activities to be undertaken in the early stages of a nuclear or radiological security incident, i.e. after the detection of illicit nuclear or other radioactive material.
The workshop included a conceptual overview of nuclear forensics, technical presentations, group discussions, presentations on national nuclear forensics capabilities in Australia, China, and Singapore, and a significant part of hands-on training using portable measurement instruments.
The event was hosted by VARANS (Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety).
