The latest edition of the JRC Newsletter has been published and can be downloaded here.

This issue features an editorial by Reinhard F. Hüttl, Chairman of Euro-CASE, the umbrella organisation of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering and President of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) in Germany. The cover story presents a series of JRC tools and platforms to forecast and monitor natural hazards. It provides an insight into how the JRC can help to reduce the risks or to support the coordination of emergency responses in the event of natural disasters such as floods, fires or earthquakes.

Among the news items there are stories about the JRC's contribution to the 2013 Global Innovation Index, the relevance of short supply chains in the distribution of agricultural and food products in the European Union, and the JRC's partial stochastic analysis of agricultural projections which was used for the OECD-FAO 2013 Agriculture Outlook.

Further reading provides details on how indicators can help assess farmland abandonment, how a healthier diet can protect freshwater resources, and why the space sector is likely to tap into terrestrial fuel cell technology.

The newsletter also includes briefs on new certified reference materials for environment, food and health, on the slowdown of Africa's deforestation rates and the opening of new Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence in Amman and Tbilisi.

The purpose of the JRC Newsletter is to provide customers, stakeholders and staff, along with anyone interested in who we are and what we do, with a selection of recent highlights of JRC science and technology, support to European policy making, contributions to scientific events and other news of interest. To receive regular email alerts about new issues of the newsletter, you can send a simple message.
