Bioindicators for environmental monitoring: JRC releases new certified reference material

ERM®-CD200 is a new material based on Fucus vesiculosus, a brown algae commonly known as bladderwrack. It is certified for the mass fractions of arsenic, cadmium, copper, mercury, lead, selenium and zinc. This material represents an important measurement tool, as seaweeds are indicators of coastal environmental health. Selected chemical elements have long been measured in seaweed, as this plant can serve as a reliable bioindicator for the changing presence of several environmental pollutants over space and time. Seaweeds, in particular wracks, are also increasingly harvested: Seaweed is added to animal feed to enrich its nutritional properties, and its products (alginates) are widely used in foods as stabilisers, thickeners and emulsifiers.

ERM®-CD200 was processed and certified in accordance to ISO Guides 34 and 35 and it will replace the former CRM BCR 279 (Ulva Lactuca).
