We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The central prediction of the JRC's annual forecast is that the 2007 total cereal harvest will be 276 M tonnes or 1,6% below the average of the last five years with Central and Eastern Europe losing out the most.
Figures released by the Joint Research Centre's European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) show that burned land area in 2007 at 3376 square kilometres is already reaching 2006 totals and that July has been the worst month on record.
Complementing traditional approaches to medical intelligence, the Joint Research Centre has developed a new web-based disease surveillance system called MediSys that can provide health authorities with earlier identification of potential health threats, their verification, assessment and investigation in order to recommend public health control measures.
According to the JRC's European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), 183 987 hectares were burnt in Greece between 24 and 26 August, during the major forest fires that have ravaged that country. This brings the provisional figure to this point in the 2007 forest fire season in Greece to 268 834 hectares. The concentration of damage in the Peloponnese coincides with the fire danger maps produced by EFFIS Fire Danger system that shows the Peloponnese as being the area of Greece with highest meteorological fire risk. However, the forecasts for the coming days show that the fire risk in Greece in general and the Peloponnese in particular will reduce.
Today, the President of Eurolab, Jean-Luc Laurent, and the Director of the JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Alejandro Herrero, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Geel, Belgium.
The allocation of €1.4 billion to projects in nanosciences and -technology makes the EU the world's biggest contributor in this field. The JRC, member of the Commission's interservice group on nanosciences, is currently carrying out a study on the present and future potential of nanotechnology, thus helping to identify opportunities and risks for future developments in the EU.
The European Nuclear Conference 2007 (ENC 2007), held in Brussels from 16 to 20 September 2007, provides a platform for sharing knowledge and insight on the latest developments in nuclear research and its applications. The JRC, with its long standing experience in this sector, presents its work in areas ranging from new reactor and energy technologies, to waste management and nuclear safeguards.
Energy consumption worldwide is likely to double between 2000 and 2050, and nuclear energy will remain a key element in future low-carbon energy systems. Europe has the largest nuclear industry in the world and one third of its electricity comes from nuclear plants. To prepare for the future and maintain European leadership in this sector, a Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform has been launched today, bringing together researchers and industry to define and implement a Strategic Research Agenda and corresponding Deployment Strategy.
"Towards a new culture for urban mobility” is the title of the Green Paper adopted today by the Commission to open a debate on the key issues of urban mobility: free-flowing and greener towns and cities, smarter urban mobility and an urban transport which is accessible, safe and secure for all European citizens. With this Green Paper the Commission wants to identify, in partnership with all parties, what obstacles to successful urban mobility exist and how to remove them.
