In an article published in Nature, JRC scientists describe how, in collaboration with Google, they have quantified changes in global surface waters and created interactive maps which highlight the changes in the Earth's surface water over the past 32 years.

In a recent literature and Internet search, JRC scientists have identified 25 different types of nanotechnology applications in fluids (e.g. cross-linkers, surfactant systems), proppants, and downhole tools used for hydraulic fracturing of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs.

The 13th Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the United Nations’ (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is taking place from 4 to 17 December in Cancun, Mexico. JRC-Geel has released a new sewage sludge reference material (ERM®-CC144), certified for the mass fraction of the total and aqua regia extractable content of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. This material can help laboratories to assess the impact of sewage sludge application on farmland.

On 2 December, the Commission launched a new training and knowledge-sharing initiative to prepare specialists for the dismantling of present and future obsolete nuclear plants in Europe as they reach their end-of-life. Led by the JRC, the European Learning Initiatives for Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation (ELINDER) will be implemented in cooperation with 14 partners with expertise in the nuclear field.
