The JRC Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) has selected the architects that will oversee construction of its new office buildings. A technical committee consisting of a panel of architects and four representatives from ITU, JRC and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe evaluated seventeen proposed projects and a range of innovative designs before selecting MGF Architekten GmbH from Stuttgart, last week, 12 December.

The JRC's Thermal, Electro-Magnetic, Physical Equipment Stress Testing (TEMPEST) laboratory at the Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC) has been accredited in conformance with the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service UKAS.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in PoznaD closes today, 12 December. In the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the event is a milestone for international processes launched under the Bali Road Map marking the beginning of negotiations on strengthened international action on climate change and set to conclude at the 'COP 15' meeting in Copenhagen next year.

The latest Photovoltaics Status Report, released today by the JRC Institute for Energy (IE), shows a continued increase in the yearly growth rate of solar photovoltaic production, averaging 40% over five years and peaking at 60% in 2007. The current world electricity production from photovoltaic systems is approximately 10 billion KWh, of which half comes from the EU. Solar energy still accounts for only 0.2% of total electricity consumption in Europe. Nevertheless, the net effect is 4 million fewer tonnes of CO2 being released.

Dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) recently discovered in pork and animal feed in Ireland have triggered a recall by Irish authorities of all domestically produced pork products from the market. As the situation unfolds, the JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) is on hand to provide Member States' laboratories with certified reference materials to ensure the accurate detection and quantification of dioxins and PCBs in food.

The Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, a form of extended periodic table of the elements that displays all known atoms of any element and their radioactive data, is 50 years old today. To celebrate the occasion, the JRC Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) in Karlsruhe is hosting selected guests including Members of European Parliament, politicians and Nobel prizes laureates, for a discussion of its history and use since its creation in 1958. The event will also serve as the launch of a book specially prepared for the chart's anniversary.

JRC scientist Arnulf Jäger-Waldau of the Institute for Energy (IE) was this week named as lead Author for the forthcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) special report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation. More than two hundred experts from around the world have been selected to participate in the preparation of the report and Mr Jäger-Waldau's selection as lead author can be considered recognition of his expertise in the field.
