    A newly developed index identifies areas of the Mediterranean Sea which are most affected by non-native, invasive alien species introduced through the Suez Canal, by aquaculture or through shipping. The top invaders appear to be algae, according to a JRC study.

    Species that made their way through the Suez Canal show highest concentration in the eastern parts of the basin, while those introduced by shipping are mostly present in many central and north-western sites. Two high-impact areas were evident around the Italian peninsula due to species introduced by aquaculture.

    A JRC-led article published in Remote Sensing last week presents a new method for mapping river properties using remote sensing. The new method provides a tool for monitoring and characterising the hydromorphological status (physical characteristics of the shape, boundaries and content) of river systems along the entire channel network and through time, opening novel and significant perspectives to river science and management, notably for planning and targeting actions at the large scale.

    Examples and strategies for a successful choice and combination of agricultural measures to implement the 2000 Water Framework Directive (WFD) – which commits EU Member States to achieving good status of all water bodies by 2015 – are provided in the JRC's recently published report 'River Basin Network on Water Framework Directive and Agriculture'. Within the framework of the WFD's Common Implementation Strategy, the Pilot Rivers Basins network, coordinated by the JRC, was set up to provide feedback on practical implementation issues.

    An article recently published by IES scientists on the gateways of introduction of marine alien species to European Seas provides useful information to help target national and European measures to prevent future introductions of marine alien species. The article, which identifies the main countries and cities of introduction of different marine alien species, finds that most introductions come via shipping, with a marked geographical pattern in the introductions depending on the main maritime activities of different regions.

    The JRC is supporting the European Commission in assessing the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck Afghanistan and Pakistan on 26 October through up-to-date situation reports and maps. In this mountainous region with poor infrastructure, satellite-derived maps are particularly useful to understand the location and extent of the damages.

    A recently published IES article investigates how climate change is likely to impact land vegetation and the carbon cycle across Europe. It studies the impact of hydroclimatic variables on vegetation across Europe, by analysing anomalies in precipitation, temperature and FAPAR (the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation) during the period 1998-2011. The analysis was based on ESA satellite-measured FAPAR values, and high-resolution climate and land cover data, from the EU’s ENSEMBLES and CORINE databases respectively.

    After the recent release of the final report of the PESETA project on the impact of climate change in Europe, the JRC's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) is launching a series of monographic reports with more information on each of the sector specific studies of the project. The first such report, "Impacts of climate change in agriculture in Europe" has been published today. If the climate expected in the 2080s occurred today, European agriculture could face an annual decrease of up to 10% in crop yields, which would translate into yearly additional GDP losses of 0.32%.
