    Examples and strategies for a successful choice and combination of agricultural measures to implement the 2000 Water Framework Directive (WFD) – which commits EU Member States to achieving good status of all water bodies by 2015 – are provided in the JRC's recently published report 'River Basin Network on Water Framework Directive and Agriculture'. Within the framework of the WFD's Common Implementation Strategy, the Pilot Rivers Basins network, coordinated by the JRC, was set up to provide feedback on practical implementation issues.

    The European Commission has adopted the JRC's first Work Programme for 2014-2015 under Horizon 2020, the new EU strategy to boost research and innovation. The programme is aligned with the European Union's policy priorities, such as overcoming the economic crisis, encouraging the use of renewable energy and tackling climate change.

    All EU Member States are highly involved in the ERA-NET scheme, the EU main initiative for fostering public transnational R&D collaboration. This is the main finding of the report "Mapping ERA-NETs across Europe: overview of the ERA-NET scheme and its results", published today by the JRC's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS). ERA-NET facilitates ministries and public research agencies working together to coordinate research policies and to develop joint calls and research programmes.

    In a recently published article, the JRC presents its 1-km-resolution map of semi-natural vegetation in agricultural land in the EU-27, and assesses and classifies the relation between semi-natural vegetation and ecosystem services in EU regions.

    The Commission presented today its Communication on "Better Careers and More Mobility: A European Partnership for Researchers". This Communication, which is a follow up of the 2007 Green Paper "The European Research Area: New Perspectives" aims at establishing a partnership between the Member States and the Commission to ensure that the necessary human resources in research are available to sustain and enhance the contribution of science and technology to a dynamic, knowledge based European society.

    With the close cooperation of the US mission to the EU, the JRC organised a high-level meeting on Thursday 26 September in order to examine the scientific potential to support eco-industries and technologies on both sides of the Atlantic.

    In the run-up to the 4th European Conference on Corporate R&D and Innovation (CONCORDi-2013), the JRC has launched a call for papers on the topic of this edition: "Financing R&D and innovation for corporate growth in the EU: Strategies, drivers and barriers".

    The European Commission has launched an on-line consultation on the role of family farming with a view to identifying key challenges and priorities for the future. Contributions will feed the preparations of the European conference "Family farming: A dialogue towards more sustainable and resilient farming in Europe and the world" scheduled for 29 November 2013, in the context of the declaration of 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming by the United Nations.

    The JRC and Euro-CASE, the European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering, co-organised a high-level roundtable on 19 September on the dialogue between science, technology and society, in the areas of energy and climate change, in order to identify how important technological changes are perceived and to determine the key factors to improve the interaction.
