    A JRC report on research, development and demonstration (R,D&D) projects on electric cars in the EU, with a total budget of €1.9 billion (65% from public funding), finds that increased exchange of information and more coordination between projects would result in a better leverage of the investments. The report "Paving the way to electrified road transport – Publicly funded research, development, and demonstration projects on electric and plug-in cars in Europe", lists more than 320 projects covering the period 2007-2015 which received EU or national public funding, and with a total budget of more than €1 million.

    A recently published article on the impact of hydrogen sensor miniaturisation shows that in some cases the performance of micro-machined sensors is better in comparison to conventional ones, while in others significant degradations may occur. The study was carried out by the JRC in collaboration with the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the University of Québec Trois-Rivières.

    The JRC has substantially contributed to the new EU system established to ensure that European biofuels and bioliquids come from sustainable sources and meet the highest environmental standards. A key tool is the JRC's methodology to quantify changes to the amount of carbon in soils and biomass when land use changes as a result of biofuels production. This is an important factor in the sustainability assessment. The methodology follows the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories and is supported by comprehensive global data collected by the JRC. The methodology was the basis for the Commission decision on the guidelines for the calculation of land carbon stocks.

    The European Commission has adopted two proposals today that will mark a step forward in the development and marketing of clean and safe hydrogen vehicles The first is the setting up of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative (JTI), an ambitious industry-led integrated programme of Research, technology development and demonstration activities. This Public-Private Partnership driven by European industry will be implemented over the next 6 years with a financial contribution from the EU of € 470 million, to be matched by the private sector. The JTI should accelerate the development of hydrogen technologies to the point of commercial take-off between 2010 and 2020. Secondly, a number of hydrogen cars are already ripe for market introduction today. Thus, the Commission proposes to simplify their approval so that they will be seen more often on Europe's streets. Both proposals will now be considered by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.

    The European Commission adopted today a package of measures aimed at improving transport connections between the European Union and its neighbours. It proposed a mandate in view to negotiate a Transport Community Treaty with the Western Balkans and reported on the good progress in the exploratory talks that followed the adoption of the "Guidelines for transport in Europe and neighbouring regions".

    The European Commission adopted a new strategy and action plan to improve customs risk management, responding to the need for better knowledge on cargo movements and supply chains. In this effort, the JRC provides scientific and technical support by evaluating the potential benefits of integrating information on shipping container movements and events in pre-arrival customs risk analysis.

    With their overview of international polymer-electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) test procedures, the JRC, together with the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) of the US Department of Energy (DoE), made the first step towards global harmonisation of testing protocols.

    A series of sustainability measures – if implemented – may reduce urban transport CO emissions by up to 8.8% in 2030, according to a report by the JRC. Introducing congestion charging zones, reverting to teleworking and conference calls instead of commuting as well as reallocating road lanes to public transport, are the three measures that top the list of 21. Together, these would account for a reduction of 18.3 million tons of C0₂, corresponding to 75,000 flights from London to New York, which is equivalent to 10 years of air traffic for the route.

    Vehicles using a variable mixture of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and hydrogen (H2) could reduce certain pollutant emissions by more than 80% in comparison to petrol-driven cars, according to the JRC report 'Evaluation of a Euro 4 vehicle with various blends of CNG/H2-fuel'.
