    The 10th ESARDA course has been successfully organised and hosted by the Nuclear Security Unit (ITU Ispra) from the 18th until the 22nd of March. The annual course has been conducted at JRC Ispra since 2005, featuring a full five-day program with lectures delivered by worldwide experts in the field of Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation.

    On 15 June the Joint Research Centre’s Institute for Transuranium Elements in Karlsruhe (JRC-ITU) celebrates its 50th anniversary. The 1000 visitors will join the celebrations on a journey, discovering science together with renowned scientists and specialists. They will have the unique opportunity to visit the laboratories and an extensive range of advanced facilities, many unavailable elsewhere in Europe.

    The Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, a form of extended periodic table of the elements that displays all known atoms of any element and their radioactive data, is 50 years old today. To celebrate the occasion, the JRC Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) in Karlsruhe is hosting selected guests including Members of European Parliament, politicians and Nobel prizes laureates, for a discussion of its history and use since its creation in 1958. The event will also serve as the launch of a book specially prepared for the chart's anniversary.

    Registration Now Open! - Every two years the JRC-ITU organises Summer Schools on Actinide Science at its laboratories in Karlsruhe. Young researchers from all over the world have participated in lectures, laboratory visits and demonstrations. The 8th Summer School will be held from the 15th to the 19th of June 2015.

    In collaboration with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), JRC scientists have measured the properties of a new type of liquid scintillator. With advanced digital electronics, a detector built with this material is capable of distinguishing between neutron and gamma radiation. This enables the use of the material for detection systems against illicit trafficking of radioactive sources and nuclear material (nuclear security), and for the quantification of fissile and special nuclear material in nuclear samples and fuel assemblies (safeguards).

    Today at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Chicago, Ekaterina Dadachova of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York gave a topical lecture on "Novel approaches to the therapy of infectious diseases", detailing the results of a joint project with scientists at the JRC Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) on the use of alpha-immunotherapy as a new option for the treatment of HIV infections.

    The JRC Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) has been involved in the determination of the phonon dispersion curves of single crystalline PuCoGa5 samples by inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) at room temperature. This was done at the European Synchrotron in Grenoble (ESRF). The understanding of the superconductor PuCoGa5 physical properties will allow advances in the global understanding of unconventional superconductivity.
