    A novel approach to fishery management has been presented during the stakeholders meeting of the Assessment for All (a4a) initiative, held today and tomorrow at the JRC's premises in Ispra. Under this initiative, the JRC developed a new assessment model for the rapid assessment of fish stocks.

    Examples and strategies for a successful choice and combination of agricultural measures to implement the 2000 Water Framework Directive (WFD) – which commits EU Member States to achieving good status of all water bodies by 2015 – are provided in the JRC's recently published report 'River Basin Network on Water Framework Directive and Agriculture'. Within the framework of the WFD's Common Implementation Strategy, the Pilot Rivers Basins network, coordinated by the JRC, was set up to provide feedback on practical implementation issues.

    The European Commission has adopted the JRC's first Work Programme for 2014-2015 under Horizon 2020, the new EU strategy to boost research and innovation. The programme is aligned with the European Union's policy priorities, such as overcoming the economic crisis, encouraging the use of renewable energy and tackling climate change.

    Favourable weather conditions and an increase in the planted area farmed should lead to a total cereals harvest close to 301m tonnes for this year in the European Union, 43m tonnes more than in 2007. This represents an increase of 16% on the 2007 harvest and 9% on the past five years' average production. This forecast, published today by the European Commission, is based on an updated analysis by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), using an advanced crop yield forecasting system.

    If the climate expected in the 2080s occurred today, the EU would face yearly GDP losses between €20 and €65 billion, depending on the temperature increase in Europe (2.5°C to 5.4°C). This is one of the forecasts of the final report of the PESETA study, published today by the JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS). The PESETA study also looked at different regional impacts of climate change across the EU. Damages would occur mainly in Southern and Central Europe, while Northern Europe would be the sole region to benefit, in economic terms and for the aspects studied, from climate change.

    A map with around 1700 fishing ports in the EU, indicating the relevance of fishing activities in terms of employment, has been published in a recent JRC co-authored article. This study fills in the gaps of available socio-economic data for fisheries at local level, and expands possibilities to perform regional analyses in support of the new Common Fishery Policy.

    The 2012 bluefin tuna fishing season is open in the Mediterranean and the Eastern Atlantic from 16 May to 14 June. By providing daily maps of the bluefin tuna preferred habitat, the JRC helps ensuring that the fishing fleet fully respects the rules during the main fishing season.

    The JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) has published in Nature Biotechnology an analysis on the agronomic and economic performanes of the first GM crop cultivated in the EU. Currently, the only GM crop authorized for commercial cultivation in the EU is a GM maize resistant to certain pests, known as Bt maize. The EU Member State with the highest adoption rate of Bt maize by farmers is Spain, where the crop has been grown commercially 9 years. The Spanish case was selected to evaluate the agronomic and economic performance for farmers of Bt maize.

    The European Commission is to renew the membership of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF). The committee will be composed of scientific experts competent in the area of fisheries and aquaculture management.
