    JRC scientists have developed a new method to assess and improve the resource efficiency of energy-using products, with a particular focus on their end-of-life. Most notably, results are being used for the revision of EU Ecodesign implementing measure for electronic displays (TV and computer screens) and the revision of EU Ecolabel criteria for television sets and personal and notebook computers.

    A JRC study looking into the investment intentions of European farmers in the period 2014-2020 found that 56% of farmers interviewed plan to invest during that period: most of them would rely on their own resources and would target better quality of production and improved working conditions.

    Recent data from EU Member States, such as from the National Alcohol Fraud Task Force in Poland, show that the amount of seized illicit alcohol coming from other Member States into Poland is almost zero after a procedure co-developed by the JRC for denaturing alcohol was included in a Commission Regulation to fight and prevent fraud in this area.

    Together with the College of Europe, the JRC organised the third high-level roundtable on financial stability today. The participants tried to identify possible new avenues for scientific support to structural reforms, the financing of the real economy and shadow banking monitoring. They also explored the risks and opportunities in the context of the on-going Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations.

    The European Commission has adopted the JRC's first Work Programme for 2014-2015 under Horizon 2020, the new EU strategy to boost research and innovation. The programme is aligned with the European Union's policy priorities, such as overcoming the economic crisis, encouraging the use of renewable energy and tackling climate change.

    A high-level JRC roundtable on efficient buildings was organised today as a follow-up to the 26 March event for scientific support to growth and jobs in the areas of efficient buildings, vehicles and equipment. Today the participants deepened the dialogue on efficient buildings, discussing initiatives, financial aspects and the link between technology, policy and behaviour.

    According to the 2013 Education and Training Monitor recently launched by the European Commission, sixteen Member States decreased their spending on education between 2008 and 2011, with six showing further significant budget decreases in 2012. The Education and Training Monitor is an annual publication examining the evolution of Europe’s education and training systems, allowing Member States to compare themselves against others. Most of the analysis presented in the Monitor is based on reports produced by the JRC.

    Launched today at the European Development Days in Brussels, EU Aid Explorer is a unique web tool that provides easy access to clear, complete and accurate data on development and humanitarian aid around the world. Maps and graphs are used to visualise which donor is active where, which sectors and countries receive how much assistance and how funding changes over time.

    The 2013 edition of the Regional Competitiveness Index (RCI) has been launched by the JRC, in collaboration with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional Policy. The RCI was first published in 2010 and shows that competitiveness has a strong regional dimension, which national level indicators cannot capture.
