    Covering all rural and urban areas in the EU, the new European settlement map created by the JRC provides the first comprehensive overview of all built-up areas in Europe.

    The JRC has released a new strategy on how to replace, reduce and refine the use of fish in testing of chemicals’ effect on flora and fauna in water (aquatic toxicity) and chemicals’ uptake and concentration in living organisms (bioaccumulation). Out of the 11.5 million animals used for experimental purposes in the EU (2011 data), cold blooded animals, namely reptiles, amphibians and fish represent 12.4%. In the case of specific testing for toxicological safety assessment, fish represent 18% of the one million animals used.

    The JRC, in collaboration with the Italian coast guard service, has developed a new method to verify whether ship positions reported with the Automatic Identification System (AIS) are correct. This effective method does not need any additional sensors or technologies and it makes it possible to validate reported data and detect unintentionally incorrect, jammed or deliberately falsified information reported by ships.

    The JRC has released a new report providing a comprehensive overview of its work in relation to disaster risk reduction and response including their policy background and context.  As a leader in natural disaster research and automated warning systems, the JRC contributes to minimising the impact of disasters in Europe and around the globe.

    A new web-based system developed by the JRC assesses the risk of and maps the potential impact of natural hazards on industrial installations. RAPID-N allows estimating the risk of hazardous-material releases following natural disasters (known as Natech risk). It also identifies Natech-prone areas to support land-use planning, emergency-response planning, damage estimation and early warning.

    Today the JRC-managed European Reference Laboratory for Feed Additives (EURL-FA) marks 10 years of scientific and technical support to the EU legislation on feed additives, which ensures they are safe for use and traceable in the feed chain.

    The JRC-hosted EURL-FA went in operation in November 2004. Its main task is to support the authorisation procedure of feed additives that are used in the European Union. It also provides quality assurance for the analysis of feed additives through the organisation of proficiency tests (PTs).

    New software developed by the JRC is being tested in two maritime operational centres in Kenya and the Seychelles to help fight piracy and improve maritime security. The software provides a live picture of ship traffic activity, indicating current ship positions on a digital map. By combining data from a number of different vessel reporting and earth observation systems, it creates a single maritime picture of the entire western Indian Ocean.

    The World Standards Day, celebrated internationally on 14 October, puts the focus on the benefits of standards and harmonised measurements for global and regional economies, as well as for societies. Around 70% of the JRC work is related in one way or another to standardisation. Our scientists provide scientific and technical support in a range of areas from environmental monitoring to critical infrastructure protection, and from food and feed safety to nuclear safety and security.

    A new report launched today in Brussels by the JRC and the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC) analyses options for spent nuclear fuel management and their state of development.  The report calls for a flexible adoption strategy, more targeted funding and the need for deep geological repositories.

    In support of EU legislation on safety of chemicals, the JRC has published a state-of-the art review of test methods and non-testing (computational) approaches that help promote the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal experiments - known as the 3Rs - in the safety assessment of chemicals.  The report "Alternative methods for regulatory toxicology – a state-of-the-art review" focuses on "non-standard" methods, i.e. those that are not included in current regulatory guidelines.
