    Through this first user survey, the JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) intends to collect information about the way ERAWATCH users perceive and use the online information platform, as well as to gather suggestions and expectations to support the service's future evolution. The survey will be open until March 14, 2008.

    The Commission presented today its Communication on "Better Careers and More Mobility: A European Partnership for Researchers". This Communication, which is a follow up of the 2007 Green Paper "The European Research Area: New Perspectives" aims at establishing a partnership between the Member States and the Commission to ensure that the necessary human resources in research are available to sustain and enhance the contribution of science and technology to a dynamic, knowledge based European society.

    The first event to be organised by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research within the French Presidency of the European Union is taking place in Toulouse, from the 7th to the 9th of July. The conference, jointly run by the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE), was opened today by Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik and the French Ministry's Director General for Research and Innovation.

    Over 300 researchers, policy makers, business representatives and journalists filled the main auditorium of the Fira de Barcelona conference centre on Sunday to witness Director General of the Joint Research Centre Dr Roland Schenkel, along with CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Dr Alan Leshner, give a joint presentation entitled “Mars and Venus: How Europeans and Americans view and use Science”. The symposium, moderated by Professor Patrick Cunningham, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government of Ireland, was a highlight of the scientific programme of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) 2008, taking place in Barcelona July 18-22, 2008.

    The 2008 EU R&D Industrial Investment Scoreboard is now available. R&D investment by EU companies has increased by 8.8% according to the report, published today. This compares to an increase of 8.6% in investment by American companies.

    The Academic Ranking of World Universities carried out annually by Shanghai's Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has become a reference for scholars and policy makers in the field of higher education. However, a recent study by the JRC has cast doubt on the substance of statistics upon which the ranking is based. The study, carried out by researchers at the Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning based on indicators and benchmarks (CRELL) and published in September, asks whether the Jiao Tong ranking serves its intended purpose and compares it with the most widely cited European alternative, Britain's The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES).

    The 2008 European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) published on 22 January shows the EU making substantial progress in its innovation performance preceding the financial crisis. The "innovation gap" between the EU and both the US and Japan was reduced, thanks in particular to progress made by many new Member States such as Cyprus, Romania and Bulgaria. Across the EU, particular progress was made in human resources and the availability of finance for innovation. However, innovative investments by businesses are still relatively weak, especially when compared to the US and Japan.

    ERAWATCH, the European Commission's on-line information platform on research systems and policies in Europe, has published its 2008 Analytical Country Reports on research in individual EU Member States. The reports assess the performance of national research systems and enable the comparison of one country with another. This is the first time all 27 Member States have been covered.
