    The JRC and the European Commission's Research Directorate-General, in co-operation with the Ministry of Science of the Republic of Serbia, have organised a research information event in Belgrade on 12th June 2007. The objective of this event was to inform Serbian R&D organisations and researchers about the opportunities offered by the newly launched 7th Framework Programme (FP7), in particular with regard to collaborative activities and mobility of researchers. Examples were presented in the areas of environment, food, agriculture, and nuclear safety and safeguards. The intention is to encourage dialogue, identify potentially interested partners and pave the way for further collaboration within FP7.

    The Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education is organising today a conference on co-operation between the JRC and Polish research institutions. The event, which takes place at Wroclaw University of Technology, aims to inform the JRC management and Board of Governors of current trends in Poland's R&D policy and scientific activities in the Wroclaw area and present JRC activities to current and potential Polish partner organisations. It has been opened by the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education (Prof. MichaelB SeweryDski), the Mayor of Wroclaw (Mr RafaB Dutkiewicz) and Prof. Jerzy Buzek, MEP and former Prime Minister of Poland.

    A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 5 July 2007 during a JRC Board of Governors meeting taking place in the city of Wroclaw, Poland. The agreement outlines enhanced co-operation measures between Turkish research organisations represented by TÜB0TAK and the Joint Research Centre.

    The team of Euresearch Head Office in Bern, accompanied by its Director, Olivier Küttel, and the JRC National Contact Point (NCP), Sasha Hugentobler, visited the JRC Ispra site on 1-2 October 2007. Euresearch is the Swiss association, mandated by the State Secretariat for Education and Research, that informs, motivates trains and advises with the goal to increase the Swiss participation to FP7. All Swiss Framework Programme NCPs participated in this visit.

    The European Commission adopted today a package of measures aimed at improving transport connections between the European Union and its neighbours. It proposed a mandate in view to negotiate a Transport Community Treaty with the Western Balkans and reported on the good progress in the exploratory talks that followed the adoption of the "Guidelines for transport in Europe and neighbouring regions".

    The JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) is a partner in the organisation of the ninth edition of the Bled Forum on Europe, a scientific event involving NGO's, governmental bodies, research institutions and the business sector. This year's edition intends to identify some of the key challenges posed by climate change and to put forward internationally coordinated responses to the identified challenges.

    The kick-off meeting for the Western Balkan countries INCO-NET (WBC-INCO.NET) was held in February 2008 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This programme is one of the six new projects on international cooperation funded by the European Union to support bi-regional dialogues in the area of science and technology (S&T). JRC's main role in this project is to help define a methodology for priority setting to be applied in all Western Balkan Countries as well as to support dialogue among WBC and various Commission Directorate-Generals. Monitoring cooperation and participation in the FP7 are also part of the JRC role in the platform.

    Today the State Secretary in Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Radovan Fuchs, and the Director General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), Roland Schenkel, opened an information event on collaboration possibilities within the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).

    The JRC Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBÝTAK), jointly organised the conference "Security Research. Technology Solutions to Enhance Systems Interoperability" in Ankara on 17-18 April 2008.

    Following Albania's recent decision to join in the EU's R&D effort under its 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technology Development (FP7), a Research Information Event, organised by the European Commission, COST (European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) and the Albanian Ministry for Science and Education, took place in Tirana on 6 May 2008.
