    The JRC and the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) have successfully demonstrated the principle of an innovative technique analysing particle-like debris of melted nuclear fuel.

    The European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) on Heavy Metals (HM) organised two proficiency tests (PTs) to assess the capability of laboratories to determine cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury and inorganic arsenic in mushrooms. Results show that arsenic and inorganic arsenic remain a challenge for a significant number of laboratories.

    The radionuclide 209Po is the principal radiochemical tracer used worldwide to monitor polonium, an element known for its high chemical and radiological toxicity. Measurements performed in the radionuclide metrology laboratory of the JRC show that the reference value of the 209Po half-life used over the last 50 years is in error by 20%.

    The 3rd Neutron Resonance Analysis School was hosted at the EC-JRC-IRMM in Geel, Belgium from 15 to 19 December 2014. The school was organised within the FP7 project CHANDA (Solving Challenges in Nuclear Data for the Safety of European Nuclear Facilities), and in collaboration with the University of Manchester, IAEA, OECD/NEA and CEA.

    JRC scientists developed a formalism to propagate both the correlated and uncorrelated uncertainty components of time-of-flight cross section data generated in the Geel site linear accelerator (GELINA) hosted by the JRC-Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements.

    The workshop THEORY-3 was jointly organised by JRC-IRMM and the National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (NIPHNE) - Horia-Holubei, Bucharest, Romania. The workshop took place in Opatija, Croatia, on 16-18 September 2014. It is the third in a series of workshops financed within the JRC Enlargement and Integration programme.

    The World Standards Day, celebrated internationally on 14 October, puts the focus on the benefits of standards and harmonised measurements for global and regional economies, as well as for societies. Around 70% of the JRC work is related in one way or another to standardisation. Our scientists provide scientific and technical support in a range of areas from environmental monitoring to critical infrastructure protection, and from food and feed safety to nuclear safety and security.

    This event, organised on 30 September and 1-2 October, 2014, provided an opportunity for experts in analytical sciences to become TrainMiC® Authorised Trainers. TrainMiC® focuses on how to interpret the metrological requirements of the ISO/IEC 17025 for chemical and bio-analytical measurements.

    Scientists from the JRC and other European nuclear research institutions recommended an update of the prompt fission gamma-ray emission data for 241Pu and explored the possible reason for underestimation of prompt heat production.

    In view of improving nuclear model calculations, the influence of prompt neutron and gamma-ray emission on even-odd effects in fission has been studied by JRC scientists in collaboration with the theoretical group of the Bucharest University.
