    Financial services could be disrupted in case of a severe space weather event, due to their dependency on accurate timing often provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). A report published by the JRC addresses the potential impact, in particular the effect of a GNSS services loss on timing systems and the sector’s vulnerability. Awareness among operators and regulators worldwide is currently limited and resilience across the financial services sector needs to be built, authors say.

    The JRC recently published its 2014 edition of the "Smart Grid projects outlook", which presents the most comprehensive database of smart grid and smart metering initiatives up until the first quarter of 2014 across the European Union, Switzerland and Norway. The results can also now be visualised using new interactive, freely available web tools. In this update, more than 450 smart grid projects were identified, accounting for a total investment of €3.15 billion.

    Today the JRC organised a roundtable discussion on how science can provide support to energy markets, with a focus on liquidity. The event also saw the official launch of the Baltic Energy Security Research Platform, a network of Research and Development entities, led by the JRC, willing to work together on energy security projects in the Baltic region.
