    JRC scientists have supported the European Commission's Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (DG ECHO) with information and analysis on the flood crisis in Myanmar/Burma which followed a period of unusually heavy precipitation starting mid-July. By the beginning of August the country began to experience the most severe flooding in decades, while heavy rainfall continued during the first half of the month.

    On 29 June, at the EU-China Summit, Vladimir Šucha, Director-General of the JRC and Professor Guo Huadong, Director-General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (CAS-RADI) signed a new collaborative research arrangement.

    On 23 June, Sentinel-2A was launched from Kourou, French Guiana.  It is the second satellite in the joint European Union and European Space Agency Copernicus programme, following the launch of Sentinel in April 2014.

    The JRC took part at the biennial European Civil Protection Forum, which brings together the European civil protection community to build on the experience in disaster risk management.

    The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction kicked off in Sendai, Japan, on 14 March. Several thousand participants are attending the four-day conference where also JRC Director-General, Vladimir Šucha, is presenting the role and potential of science and technology in disaster risk reduction and the future JRC knowledge centre for disaster risk management.

    The JRC's European radiological data exchange platform (EURDEP) makes radiological monitoring data widely available from most European countries in nearly real-time. This year, the tool celebrates 20 years of service, and features new developments. A new feature allows interactive maps to be produced, displaying public EURDEP data in a simple, intuitive and attractive way.

    Covering all rural and urban areas in the EU, the new European settlement map created by the JRC provides the first comprehensive overview of all built-up areas in Europe.
