    The European Parliament (EP) and the JRC have jointly released a very large collection of documents and their translations. This rich resource can be used to improve Machine Translation software and other Language Technology applications. The ‘Digital Corpus of the European Parliament’ (DCEP) consists of EP texts produced between 2001 and 2012. It contains over 1.3 billion words in 24 languages, of text types as different as press releases, EP reports, questions to the EP and resulting answers, agendas, and more.

    Nearly a third of patents filed for technologies in digital communication at the European Patent Office originate in Asia (mainly China, Japan and Korea) and numbers are increasing; what are the consequences? This and other questions were addressed today at the JRC's conference on "The Role of Patents – Innovation in the European digital single market".

    The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction kicked off in Sendai, Japan, on 14 March. Several thousand participants are attending the four-day conference where also JRC Director-General, Vladimir Šucha, is presenting the role and potential of science and technology in disaster risk reduction and the future JRC knowledge centre for disaster risk management.

    Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) constitute one of the most discussed trends in Open Education in postsecondary education institutions.

    The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies of the Joint Research Centre (JRC-IPTS) is looking for collaborators to produce a large knowledge base for MOOC providers covering all relevant topics to analyse this phenomenon from a European perspective.
