    A JRC co-authored study has examined the evolution of components of spent nuclear fuel by comparing actual spent fuel with lab results obtained on fuel analogues in simulated, accelerated timescale. Most of the trends observed were found to be comparable with characteristics of actual spent fuel. Ongoing programmes are also addressing the retrievability of spent fuel after extended storage and its behaviour under accident conditions.

    The 10th ESARDA course has been successfully organised and hosted by the Nuclear Security Unit (ITU Ispra) from the 18th until the 22nd of March. The annual course has been conducted at JRC Ispra since 2005, featuring a full five-day program with lectures delivered by worldwide experts in the field of Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation.

    A new Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instrument is now installed and in early commissioning stages at the JRC-ITU. This unique facility will focus on determining the chemical and magnetic properties of radioactive solid-state samples and will contribute to ITU's research on actinides.

    The JRC Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) has selected the architects that will oversee construction of its new office buildings. A technical committee consisting of a panel of architects and four representatives from ITU, JRC and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe evaluated seventeen proposed projects and a range of innovative designs before selecting MGF Architekten GmbH from Stuttgart, last week, 12 December.
