    Registration Now Open! - Every two years the JRC-ITU organises Summer Schools on Actinide Science at its laboratories in Karlsruhe. Young researchers from all over the world have participated in lectures, laboratory visits and demonstrations. The 8th Summer School will be held from the 15th to the 19th of June 2015.

    The JRC has released a new report giving a comprehensive overview of its research on nuclear safety and security, including their policy background and context. The nuclear activities of the JRC are aimed at supporting the implementation of EU legislation, giving priority to the highest standards for nuclear safety and security in the Union, and internationally.

    On 7-10 July 2014 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organised an international conference exclusively dedicated, for the first time, to the area of nuclear forensics.

    Visualising latent fingerprints is common practice for police forensic laboratories in EU countries, but if the evidence is radioactively contaminated, the laboratory cannot process the fingerprints. The JRC has unique nuclear forensic capabilities which include methodologies for recovering fingerprints from contaminated surfaces. In order to support Member States’ authorities, the JRC provided access to these capabilities through a project consisting of several nuclear forensics exercises.

    The European Commission has today launched a new European nuclear security training centre (EUSECTRA), located in the JRC premises in Karlsruhe. The training centre will instruct front-line officers, trainers and experts on how to detect and respond to illicit trafficking of nuclear or other radioactive materials.

    The 10th ESARDA course has been successfully organised and hosted by the Nuclear Security Unit (ITU Ispra) from the 18th until the 22nd of March. The annual course has been conducted at JRC Ispra since 2005, featuring a full five-day program with lectures delivered by worldwide experts in the field of Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation.

    JRC-ITU are pleased to announce that fellow researchers Luca Capriotti and Andrea Quaini have been recognised with an award for their joint master thesis "High temperature behaviour of nuclear materials investigated by laser heating and fast pyrometry".

     

    The Fondazione Don Bartolomeo Grazioli Martire di Belfiore master thesis award for the physical sciences was issued from the Lombardy Institute, Academy of Sciences & Literature Milano, Italy as part of its annual science awards for 2012/2013.

     

  8. 15 Nov 2012

    In the frame of the Task MED project within the Instrument of Stability, the JRC (Nuclear Security Unit of the Institute for Transuranium Elements) has organised a training course on nuclear security for Algerian law enforcement officials. The course has been held at the INPC (Institut National de Police Criminelle) in Algiers from the 11th to the 15th of November 2012.

    Nuclear forensics is a key component in nuclear security as it provides information for the prosecution of nuclear smugglers and enables the identification of the origin of the intercepted material, thus providing essential information for improving preventive measures.
