JRC News

  1. 16 Jun 2016

In close collaboration with the Swedish University of Chalmers, JRC scientists investigated prompt fission gamma-ray spectra from plutonium isotopes to reduce statistical uncertainties on the model parameters.

  2. 14 Jun 2016

In its role as photovoltaic reference laboratory, the JRC's European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) has developed significant knowledge in the measurement determination and traceability of solar spectral measurements which can be exploited by many other institutes in Europe.

As part of its role to disseminate and manage knowledge, ESTI, since 2011, has coordinated and provided the scientific guidance to a European inter-laboratory group to develop and expand the knowledge base of fundamental solar measurements.

  3. 12 Nov 2015

Scientists from JRC, in collaboration with Swedish researchers, standardised a method to measure and analyse prompt γ-ray data emitted in nuclear fission. This is an important step to improve evaluated nuclear data files needed worldwide for precise nuclear heat calculations relevant for future sustainable and essentially CO2-free energy production.

  4. 10 Nov 2015

In close collaboration with a research group from the Australian National Measurement Institute in Pymble, JRC scientists have improved the measurement of nucleic acids by using a JRC certified reference material. This is important for digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) instrument developers.

  5. 28 Oct 2015

In close collaboration with several institutes from Member States (Belgium France, Germany) and Russia, scientists from the JRC-Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM)  performed an experiment which had the aim to study neutron angular correlations in order to elucidate the neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process.

  6. 22 Oct 2015

Scientists from the JRC contributed to a study of cross sections for neutron induced reactions with 241Am as a target nucleus. The study resulted in a new evaluation of the cross sections in the resonance region.

  7. 7 Aug 2015

The JRC, together with Nucleonica GmbH, has released a new edition of the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, an extended periodic table which displays all known isotopes of every element and their radioactive data.

  8. 28 Jul 2015

An important part of safeguards inspections is physical verification measurements at nuclear facilities. In this respect, JRC-IRMM supports these measurements i.e. through reference materials.

  9. 20 Jul 2015

JRC scientist Stefaan Pommé authored and co-authored 6 papers in a special issue of the journal Metrologia dealing with uncertainty in radioactivity measurements. The knowledge of uncertainty is crucial for the evaluation of the quality of measurement results.

The results of a recently carried out proficiency test (PT) on the analysis of trace elements in natural seawater demonstrated the challenges for laboratories because of low levels of trace elements and high salt concentration in the seawater. The use of proper standard analytical methods, such as ISO 17294-2, and sensitive techniques, notably coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was crucial to obtaining a good performance.
