    The results of a recently carried out proficiency test (PT) on the analysis of trace elements in natural seawater demonstrated the challenges for laboratories because of low levels of trace elements and high salt concentration in the seawater. The use of proper standard analytical methods, such as ISO 17294-2, and sensitive techniques, notably coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was crucial to obtaining a good performance.

    By releasing the certified reference material ERMĀ®-CD200, the JRC is providing a tailored quality control tool for laboratories measuring elements in seaweed or similar matrices; a means to control measurements in the frame of the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). The material could also be used in assessing compliance of harvested seaweed for use in food and feed with the limits of contaminants given in Directive 2002/32/EC (amended by 1275/2013/EC).

    JRC-IRMM has released ERM-CA713, a new wastewater certified reference material, developed in support of the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC).
