The World Standards Day, celebrated internationally on 14 October, was designed to raise awareness on the importance of standardisation to the global economy.

  2. 7 Oct 2014

Scientists from the JRC and other European nuclear research institutions recommended an update of the prompt fission gamma-ray emission data for 241Pu and explored the possible reason for underestimation of prompt heat production.

  3. 1 Jul 2014

JRC scientists characterised selected bottled mineral waters from the European market not only to compare results with the total indicative dose recommended by the EC/WHO for drinking water but also to prepare candidate test samples for an inter-laboratory comparison study.

JRC scientists recently developed and validated a method in-house that may serve as a reference for the quality assessment of certain biodiesel properties. The new method is based on the measurement of free and bound glycerol, i.e. mono-, di- and triacylglycerides, by on-line hydrogenation using gas chromatography. It could be further used in the production of biodiesel reference materials ensuring a reliable quality assessment of biodiesel.

One of the EU reference laboratories operated by the JRC recently demonstrated there was a significant difference between the analytical results obtained by the application of different extraction methods for the determination of lead in the kaolinitic clay (used as anti-caking agent in compound feed) as observed by feed producers. As a result, Commission Regulation (EU) No 1275/2013 setting maximum levels for undesirable substances in animal feed was amended.

  6. 27 Mar 2014

Representatives of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the JRC recently met in Gaithersburg, USA to discuss the long-standing cooperation on standardisation and metrology. Both organisations have been collaborating in areas such as healthcare, nanotechnology, environmental and food analysis, with emphasis on reference materials and cutting-edge measurement methods. They also work together in various international bodies e.g. the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Committee on Weights and Measures (CIPM) and the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS).

  7. 11 Mar 2014

A group of JRC scientists, led by Joerg Stroka, has developed an innovative procedure allowing the purification of food contaminants without the need for organic solvents.

  8. 10 Mar 2014

Food authenticity and assuring the integrity of the food chain are two priorities of the FP7 funded project "FoodIntegrity" where the JRC will contribute to create databanks, identify research gaps, develop and validate methods for the authentication of olive oils.

The EU Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) initiative inaugurated its Regional Secretariats for the Middle East and for South East Europe, Southern Caucasus, Moldova and Ukraine this summer. The Secretariats will facilitate information sharing, CBRN need assessment in the partner countries and implementation and monitoring of projects in these regions. In addition, it will promote the regional visibility of the initiative as well as facilitate coordination of CoE activities.
