    Together with the Directorate General for Energy, the JRC has recently published the first report measuring the progress of smart meters deployment across the EU against the 80% target by 2020. Member States commitments represent to date, a total potential investment of €45 billion.

    Smart meters are essential for consumers; they allow an accurate billing through the communication between the electricity meters recording the actual consumption and the monitoring utility. They may also facilitate the provision of additional services to consumers.

    With the close cooperation of the US mission to the EU, the JRC organised a high-level meeting on Thursday 26 September in order to examine the scientific potential to support eco-industries and technologies on both sides of the Atlantic.

    The JRC Institute for Energy (IE), situated in Petten, the Netherlands, has taken a major step forward in the co-ordination of complimentary energy research in Northern Europe. Energy research currently performed at JRC-IE, at the Dutch Energy Research Centre ECN and at the Dutch Nuclear Research & Consultancy group NRG have been boosted through the signing of a memorandum of understanding between these three leading Energy Research Institutes. Although collaboration has existed for many years in specific areas the MoU will ensure greater coordination of their research and technology development, especially with respect to the support of the European transition to low carbon and more sustainable energy technologies.
