    The World Standards Day, celebrated internationally on 14 October, puts the focus on the benefits of standards and harmonised measurements for global and regional economies, as well as for societies. Around 70% of the JRC work is related in one way or another to standardisation. Our scientists provide scientific and technical support in a range of areas from environmental monitoring to critical infrastructure protection, and from food and feed safety to nuclear safety and security.

    The JRC has released a new report giving a comprehensive overview of its research on nuclear safety and security, including their policy background and context. The nuclear activities of the JRC are aimed at supporting the implementation of EU legislation, giving priority to the highest standards for nuclear safety and security in the Union, and internationally.

    With their overview of international polymer-electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) test procedures, the JRC, together with the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) of the US Department of Energy (DoE), made the first step towards global harmonisation of testing protocols.

    The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the world’s leading organisation for the preparation and publication of international standards for electrotechnology, granted the ‘IEC 1906 Award’ to JRC scientist Dr Georgios Tsotridis, for his outstanding contribution in fuel cell technologies. The IEC 1906 Award, named for the year the IEC was founded, recognizes the exceptional recent achievement of experts across the world whose work is fundamental to the IEC. It is conferred annually.
