    The World Standards Day, celebrated internationally on 14 October, puts the focus on the benefits of standards and harmonised measurements for global and regional economies, as well as for societies. Around 70% of the JRC work is related in one way or another to standardisation. Our scientists provide scientific and technical support in a range of areas from environmental monitoring to critical infrastructure protection, and from food and feed safety to nuclear safety and security.

    The JRC has released a new report giving a comprehensive overview of its research on nuclear safety and security, including their policy background and context. The nuclear activities of the JRC are aimed at supporting the implementation of EU legislation, giving priority to the highest standards for nuclear safety and security in the Union, and internationally.

    The JRC and the Slovak Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport are hosting a high level conference discussing research cooperation between the JRC and Slovakia today in Bratislava, with the participation of Dušan Čaplovič, Slovak Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport and Vladimír Šucha, JRC Director-General.

    The third in the JRC's series of thematic reports has been published. Entitled 'Science for Energy', this new publication gives an insight into the research carried out by the JRC in the areas of energy efficiency, security of energy supply, renewable energy, nuclear energy , energy technology innovation and hydrogen technologies.

    Two JRC-developed tools have recently been launched: the EHRO-N locator, which helps find nuclear training and facilities, and an online course on water-water power reactors (WWER), aiming to preserve knowledge on this type of reactor.

    At the European Nuclear Society Communication Conference (PIME) held 12-15 February in Warsaw, the JRC and the Dutch Nuclear Research Centre (NRG) won the 2012 PIME Award for Communications Excellence. The winners emerged from five previously shortlisted candidates, the other competitors coming from Russia, The United Arab Emirates, Austria, and France.

    On 16 December 2011 the JRC launched the European Human Resource Observatory for the Nuclear Energy Sector (EHRO-N) and the European Nuclear Safety and Security School (EN3S). The two initiatives are aimed at preserving and upgrading skills in the nuclear field in the European Union.

    Between October and December, a JRC-run secretariat will organise and prepare a series of peer reviews on Europe’s nuclear power plants (NPPs), to be carried out by experts from the European Commission and the countries involved in early 2012. The peer reviews represent the final phase of three succeeding stages foreseen for testing the safety of the European nuclear plants.

    On April 28-29, the EU Clearinghouse on operational experiences feedback of nuclear power plants organised a kick-off meeting its enlarged composition. Safety authorities from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Slovak Republic officialised their decision to participate to the EU Clearinghouse as observers.

    The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the JRC's Institute for Energy (IE) strengthened their ongoing collaboration yesterday with the official signing of a 'Practical Arrangement' which will allow both partners to further develop scientific and technical co-operation in the fields of nuclear safety, nuclear technology and energy planning issues.
