    The World Standards Day, celebrated internationally on 14 October, puts the focus on the benefits of standards and harmonised measurements for global and regional economies, as well as for societies. Around 70% of the JRC work is related in one way or another to standardisation. Our scientists provide scientific and technical support in a range of areas from environmental monitoring to critical infrastructure protection, and from food and feed safety to nuclear safety and security.

    Six companies have received the 2013 European Code of Conduct for Data Centres Award for their respective investment in innovative energy efficient technologies, which have resulted in major reductions in energy use.

    Today in Brussels at the "ICT 2010-Digitally Driven" event, 16 more ICT firms have agreed to reduce the electricity consumption of their broadband equipment and data centres. The JRC's Institute for Energy (IE) develops and manages voluntary codes of conduct for ICT companies that can reduce their energy consumption, in many cases by as much as 50%.

    The EU code of conduct for data centres launched today by the European Commission provides guidelines, recommendations and examples of best practice which could lead to a reduction in energy consumption by data centres in Europe of up to 20%.
