    A global reduction of aerosols emissions in 2030 will likely result in up to 10% increase of photovoltaic energy (PVE) potential in western Europe and the eastern Mediterranean while a reduction of up to 7% would affect northern Africa and eastern Europe. These are some of the findings published in a recent JRC article which investigates the likely availability of photovoltaic energy (PVE) in Europe and Africa in 2030, under a scenario of reduced anthropogenic emissions, such as greenhouse gases and aerosols.

    To deepen the knowledge on extraction technologies and practices of unconventional gas and oil and minimise potential health and environment risks, the European Commission today has launched the European science and technology network on unconventional hydrocarbon extraction. The network will be established and managed by the JRC, on the basis of the guidance provided by the Steering group composed of the Directorates-General (DGs) for energy and for environment, as well as for climate action, for research & innovation and for enterprise and industry.

    On 22 January, the European Commission issued a Recommendation on minimum principles for the exploration and production of hydrocarbons (such as shale gas) using high volume hydraulic fracturing in order to contribute to bringing clarity and predictability to public authorities, market operators and citizens. It invites Member States to follow minimum principles when applying or adapting their legislation applicable to hydrocarbons exploration or production using high volume hydraulic fracturing.

    The European Commission published a Communication this week setting out the new 2030 framework with the revised climate and energy targets for a competitive, secure and low-carbon EU economy. A binding reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 40% below the 1990 level and an EU-wide binding target for renewable energy of at least 27% are the pillars of the updated framework. The Commission also suggested reforming the European Union Emission Trading System (ETS) with the establishment of a market stability reserve.

    The Electric Vehicle Radar (EV-radar), an innovative tool providing information on electric vehicle R&D projects in Europe has been launched by the JRC at the 27th International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS 27) in Barcelona (Spain). Via a large interactive touchscreen users can select project information either via a 3-dimensional car in which each key component is visible, or by geographical locations in the EU.
