    The results of an inter-laboratory comparison study on a method for assessing the cytotoxicity of nanomaterials have been published. This is an important step towards a harmonised method for toxicity screening of nanomaterials.

    Measuring the size of nanoparticles is an enduring challenge for producers and regulatory agencies alike. In fact, up to now, different techniques are used to measure the dimension of objects smaller than a 1/10000 of a millimetre and they sometimes give different results.

    From 13-17 October 2014, the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) will host the second of two workshops on helium-3 (He-3) alternative materials and technologies for safeguards applications, under the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA)-Euratom Action Sheet 47, at the JRC Ispra Site.

    IAEA Safeguards expert David Amaraggi visited the Analytical Service (AS) of JRC-ITU on July 2nd and 3rd, 2014. He is tasked with the commissioning of the new nuclear material laboratory (NML) of IAEA in Seibersdorf, the key element of the ECAS project.

    European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn will travel to Romania Oct. 3 and 4. She will participate in the first of a series of events in EU Member States to launch Horizon 2020, the EU's next research and innovation programme. While in Bucharest, Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn will meet Prime Minister Victor Ponta, open an exhibition showcasing Romanian research, and present Horizon 2020 to a conference of research and innovation stakeholders ahead of the launch of the first calls for proposals in December.

    Identifying good practices and challenges in linking universities and businesses through innovation and technology transfer – this was the focus of the round table "JRC-Universities: how to increase the contribution of universities to science and innovation", held today in Brussels. The event attracted nearly 100 senior representatives from academia and research organisations, industry, liaison offices, member states and regional authorities, as well as EU officials.

    The 10th ESARDA course has been successfully organised and hosted by the Nuclear Security Unit (ITU Ispra) from the 18th until the 22nd of March. The annual course has been conducted at JRC Ispra since 2005, featuring a full five-day program with lectures delivered by worldwide experts in the field of Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation.
