    The 1st SMARTER Conference on Smart Specialisation and Territorial Development will take place in Seville on Sept 28-30 aiming to take stock of the smart specialisation experience and assess its current state of the art both in terms of conceptual developments and practical implementation.

    The Forward Thinking Platform, a network of foresight practitioners and an open space for discussing the future of agriculture and rural development and the implications for agricultural research, has recently produced a Glossary of Terms commonly used in Futures Studies. The Glossary aims to promote a ‘common language’ with regard Futures Studies of food, agriculture and rural development. Several JRC scientists co-authored the glossary, which was created with the support of the Global Forum on Agriculture Research (GFAR).

    The Commission has launched a new activity within the Smart Specialisation Platform (S3P) in order to support regions and countries that joined the EU since 2004 to develop and exploit the synergies between Horizon 2020 (H2020) and European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF).

    A high-level event in Bratislava, co-organised by the European Commission and the Government of the Slovak Republic, today launched six scientific clusters to support economic development in the Danube Region. The six clusters will focus on: water; land & soil; bio-energy; air; data exchange & harmonisation; and smart specialisation.  They will provide scientific evidence to support the Danube Strategy, and will also serve to foster scientific cooperation across the region. The launch event today was attended amongst others by the Slovak Prime Minister H.E. Robert Fico and the Vice President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič.

    In the framework of the European Forum of Science and Industry, the JRC has co-organised today a roundtable with the Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry on the scientific support to Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
