    Scientists from 11 research organisations – including the JRC -  have demonstrated the quality and applicability of whole water reference materials for the determination of organic contaminants in natural waters. This work is supporting the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive.

    JRC scientists have developed and certified a new set of calibrants for the standardisation of measurements of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), a marker for the monitoring of diabetes in blood. Medical doctors use HbA1c values not only as an indicator for diabetes but also to assess the results of treatment.

    In collaboration with the IFCC Working Group on the Harmonisation of Autoimmune Testing, the JRC has designed and executed a study to assess the benefits and limitations of standardising in vitro diagnostics for the detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) myeloperoxidase-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (MPO-ANCA). These antibodies are markers for small-vessel associated vasculitis.

    JRC Scientists investigated an apparent violation of the well-established rule that chemical reactions proceed faster at a higher temperature (Arrhenius' law). This investigation was triggered by observations during the regular stability monitoring programme of certified reference materials (CRMs) by JRC-IRMM. It was found that one material (BCR-551) was stable when stored at -20 °C, but was degrading at -70 °C. This effect was reproducible, as samples moved from storage at -20 °C to -70 °C started also to show degradation peaks.

    JRC scientists contributed to the evaluation of the method performance related to the quantification of Alzheimer's biomarkers. The study revealed the importance of developing a certified reference material, which is currently in progress at the JRC-Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM).

    Scientists from the JRC, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Leoben (Austria), the Atomic Centre Bariloche (Argentina) and Umicore (Belgium) developed a novel approach for the production of an Al-Au alloy certified reference material (CRM). This CRM is necessary for the quality assurance of results using neutron activation analysis for trace element determination which is applied for e.g. environmental monitoring.

    Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) need to be authorised before they are allowed to enter the European market. The availability of a reference material and a validated method, together with the risk assessment are prerequisite for a possible authorisation of DP-ØØ4114-3 maize event for the European market.

    The JRC released a new GMO (genetically modified organism) certified reference material (CRM) to be used by GMO testing laboratories to analyse the GMO maize VCO-Ø1981-5 product in food and feeding stuff.

    JRC-IRMM developed and released the first fruit matrix reference material (IRMM-426 Wild Berries) certified for the two most important anthropogenic (man-made) radionuclides, 137Cs and 90Sr, and for the natural 40K. This reference material supports the precise measurement of radionuclides in agricultural products.

    JRC scientists have compiled and published an overview of the legislation and practical modalities for the implementation of radionuclide monitoring in foodstuff in the European Union. The overview also provides an outline of the monitoring programmes instituted by the Member States and stresses the importance of the quality of data.
