    The JRC has played a central role in the OECD testing programme of representative manufactured nanomaterials. The programme was led by the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) and had the objective to ensure that the approaches for assessment of hazard, exposure and risk for manufactured nanomaterials “are of a high quality, science-based and internationally harmonised."

    The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) released two European Standards to which JRC-IRMM contributed through validation of the methods.

    A special paper collection addressing a number of the current challenges regarding “Reference Materials for Chemical Analysis” has been published by the peer-reviewed journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry under the guest editorship of Hendrik Emons and Stephen Wise.

    Students from the Belgian Nuclear higher Education Network (BNEN) participated in the Nuclear Safeguards course organised by SCK•CEN at JRC-IRMM. The course aims at making nuclear engineers more acquainted with the (non-) proliferation aspects of nuclear energy. Lectures were alternated with class room exercises, a visit to the JRC-IRMM nuclear safeguards laboratories and "hands-on" measurements to verify the enrichment of uranium samples.

    From 14th to 18th  October 2013, the JRC  will host the World Standards Week at the IRMM commemorating the World Standards Day on the 14th October.

    The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is working together with the JRC on issues of common interest, and exploring potential synergies in the field of harmonisation of analytical standards for wine and spirit drinks.

    The scientific workshop on olive oil authentication, jointly organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and the Joint Research Centre, Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements (Geel, Belgium) together with the International Olive Council, took place in Madrid on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th June.

    The JRC, in collaboration with other European scientists, has developed a new protocol for the validation of methods by collaborative trial or single-laboratory validation. This leads to fit-for-purpose analytical methods to be used by official food and feed control.

    The JRC is addressing the challenges of standardisation in a two-day event, with a special focus on Eco-Innovation. Organised jointly with the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO), the European Standards Organisations (CEN and CENELEC) and the European Commission Directorate-General Enterprise and Industry, this initiative aims at linking the science, industry, standards and policy-making communities in order to facilitate the screening of emerging areas and identify early needs for standards.
