A new habitat model, developed by the JRC and partner scientists, detects areas and periods where Atlantic bluefin tuna prefers to feed and spawn. Covering most of the areas where this species lives and the entire area subject to fisheries, the model provides concrete recommendations on when and where grounds should be closed to increase yield and stability of this fishery sector in the long term.

  2. 23 Dec 2015

Scientific advice by the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF), coordinated by the JRC, has contributed to define 2016 fishing opportunities which were agreed upon by EU ministers last week.

  3. 16 Nov 2015

A recently published JRC article describes the effects of atmospheric forcing changes on the Mediterranean Sea’s primary productivity rate over the coming century. It finds that, although the average overall primary production rate will be almost unchanged, climate change will lead to a reduction in primary production in the western basin, and an increase in the eastern basin.

  4. 22 Jun 2015

The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a regulation upgrading the EU framework for the collection, management and use of data in the fisheries sector to support scientific advice regarding the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The JRC will maintain its central role under the new regulation - once adopted - and has been instrumental in the conception of the proposal, building on a longstanding experience in collecting and maintaining fisheries data reported by EU Member States.

Under the auspices of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the JRC helps to overcome the limitations of conventional stock assessment methods by promoting innovative approaches such as the Assessment for All (a4a) model. The exchange of such approaches between scientists at global level ensures that the best methods can be applied when developing management advice for fisheries, but also highlights the need for more research in fish stock assessment.

  6. 1 Oct 2014

A JRC article published yesterday in Frontiers Press investigates how human activities have influenced biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea through the introduction of alien species.

  7. 8 Aug 2013

The European Commission has today announced deductions from 2013 fishing quotas for those Member States that declared having exceeded their quotas in 2012. This yearly deduction exercise allows the Commission to immediately address the damage done to the stocks overfished in the previous year and ensure a sustainable use by Member States of common fishery resources.

  8. 20 Jun 2013
JRC-IRMM published their results of an in-house validated method for the determination of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and hexachlorobuadiene (HCBD) in fish tissue by gas chromatography with isotope dilution mass spectrometric detection (GC-IDMS).
