    A recent JRC co-authored paper provides ecological water quality targets for lakes in Europe. The study provides an ecology-based definition for the "good" status of lake waters, based on criteria including the low probability of occurrence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, the low probability of a significant decline in macrophytes (aquatic plants that provide oxygen, cover and food for fish), and clear water.

    The European Commission has launched an on-line consultation on the role of family farming with a view to identifying key challenges and priorities for the future. Contributions will feed the preparations of the European conference "Family farming: A dialogue towards more sustainable and resilient farming in Europe and the world" scheduled for 29 November 2013, in the context of the declaration of 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming by the United Nations.

    Following the announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that an unapproved variety of genetically modified, herbicide resistant wheat was found in a field in Oregon, the JRC, as European Union Reference Laboratory for GMOs, was requested to work out an efficient control system.

    The scientific workshop on olive oil authentication, jointly organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and the Joint Research Centre, Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements (Geel, Belgium) together with the International Olive Council, took place in Madrid on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th June.

    The JRC, in collaboration with other European scientists, has developed a new protocol for the validation of methods by collaborative trial or single-laboratory validation. This leads to fit-for-purpose analytical methods to be used by official food and feed control.
