    In support of the European Union Water Initiative (EUWI), the JRC and EuropeAid have developed a new mobile app that provides guidance on best practices for implementing water and sanitation projects in the developing world. It is free of charge and can be used to steer this type of projects throughout its lifecycle.

    The JRC has recently published a report which provides guidelines to implement water reuse in Europe, and analyses the associated technical, environmental, health and socioeconomic challenges to such reuse.

    Given the lack of formal guidelines at European level to address the reuse of treated wastewater, the report compares relevant national and international measures. It also provides a risk-based management approach, and identifies needs for and barriers to technological innovation and regulation.

    The JRC has set up the MSFD Competence Centre (MCC) to help EU countries achieve ‘Good Environmental Status’ of their marine waters by 2020, the main aim of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). In achieving this aim, the MSFD seeks to protect the fragile balance of marine ecosystems, upon which many economic and social activities such as fishing or tourism depend.

    A recently published JRC article describes the strong link between the nutrients in European rivers and marine productivity (up to fish production) in the Mediterranean Sea from 1960 to 2012.

    The JRC and the Cyprus Institute hosted an official signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to further strengthen the collaboration of the JRC with Cyprus. The MoU specifies advancing science, technology and innovation in fields of mutual interest including environment, climate change, energy, water and technological advances and standardisation in cultural heritage preservation.

    The European Commission set out proposals today to support "Innovation in the Blue Economy" by creating an information platform on marine research in the European Union, sharing already available data and completing a detailed sea-bed map of European waters by 2020, among other measures.

    The JRC released a guidance document for the monitoring of marine litter in European seas. It provides the Member States with recommendations and information in order to support establishing monitoring programmes, a milestone in the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Through the Directive, EU Member States committed themselves to the development of strategies to achieve good environmental status of European seas.

    Examples and strategies for a successful choice and combination of agricultural measures to implement the 2000 Water Framework Directive (WFD) – which commits EU Member States to achieving good status of all water bodies by 2015 – are provided in the JRC's recently published report 'River Basin Network on Water Framework Directive and Agriculture'. Within the framework of the WFD's Common Implementation Strategy, the Pilot Rivers Basins network, coordinated by the JRC, was set up to provide feedback on practical implementation issues.

    The JRC presented its water-related activities in partner countries during this year's World Water Week, which was held in Stockholm from 1-6 September under the theme "Water Cooperation: Building Partnerships".

    The JRC presented its new multi-compound method developed for the analysis of polar organic chemical contaminants in marine water samples in a recently published article in the Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry journal.
