    The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction kicked off in Sendai, Japan, on 14 March. Several thousand participants are attending the four-day conference where also JRC Director-General, Vladimir Šucha, is presenting the role and potential of science and technology in disaster risk reduction and the future JRC knowledge centre for disaster risk management.

    A recent JRC report finds that EU Member States will face some challenges in meeting the new reporting and accounting requirements for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals from the land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector, both under the Kyoto Protocol and under recent EU legislation.

    The European Commission adopted a new strategy and action plan to improve customs risk management, responding to the need for better knowledge on cargo movements and supply chains. In this effort, the JRC provides scientific and technical support by evaluating the potential benefits of integrating information on shipping container movements and events in pre-arrival customs risk analysis.

    The latest MARS crop monitoring in Europe bulletin, published today, reports that overall EU-28 cereal yield forecasts for 2014 remain favourable, at the level of last year and above the average of the past five years (+6.1%). Yield prospects for grain maize are excellent at the moment, with forecast yields 11% above the level of last year and the past five years' average.

    JRC analysis of EU human settlements, land-use and resource efficiency, as well as modelling work addressing options for urban and regional development have fed into the 6th Report on Economic, Social and Territorial Cohesion, released on 23 July by the European Commission.

    Better data retrieval and access, greater interoperability of data and improved coordination across the EU top the list of benefits perceived by both data producers and users of spatial information on the environment. Key changes suggested refer to improving communication and coordination, and to reducing the complexity of technical specifications as much as possible.
