    On 27-28 November in Brussels, the JRC organised a conference focusing on the strategic foresight, forecasting and assessment of future technologies. Steered by an international group of experts, the event become a common platform for some 400 practitioners, policy-makers, business, civil society and interested professionals in general to interact and help in guiding strategy, policy and decision-making to anticipate and shape future developments.

    The "Future of Europe is science" conference, co-hosted by the JRC, takes place today and tomorrow in Lisbon. It gathers some 400 actors from the world of science, industry and society, aiming at taking stock of European achievements in science over the past 10 years. World-class scientists, industrialists and political figures also debate the role science, technology and innovation can play in societal well-being and its potential to stimulate growth, jobs and business development opportunities for Europe.

    A new study estimates that EU Member States could make their business sectors more competitive by changing the way taxes are collected from companies. The study suggests that by reducing the business tax burden linked to labour costs (social security contributions, payroll taxes, etc.) and shifting the expected tax revenue to the energy consumption facet instead, Member States could lower companies' overall production costs.

    The JRC is launching a call for abstracts for the fifth edition of the “Future-oriented technology analysis" (FTA) conference. Focused on the theme "Engage today to shape tomorrow", it will be held on 27 and 28 November 2014 in Brussels.

    The JRC and the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology today signed an agreement on research co-operation in fields of mutual interest. It aims at establishing the basis for co-operation in energy, maritime affairs, food, health environment and security.

    A high level expert group to support the definition and implementation of the EU scientific programme for Expo Milano 2015 has been set up by the JRC, the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, and the European Parliament. Today's kick-off meeting was opened by Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science together with Vladimir Šucha, Director-General of the JRC.

    What do improved home gardens in Java and mobile phone ownership have in common? They are both innovations which had a remarkable impact on food and nutritional security (FNS), and are now being studied by the JRC to outline a more resilient global food system.

    The European Commission has adopted the JRC's first Work Programme for 2014-2015 under Horizon 2020, the new EU strategy to boost research and innovation. The programme is aligned with the European Union's policy priorities, such as overcoming the economic crisis, encouraging the use of renewable energy and tackling climate change.

    The Electric Vehicle Radar (EV-radar), an innovative tool providing information on electric vehicle R&D projects in Europe has been launched by the JRC at the 27th International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS 27) in Barcelona (Spain). Via a large interactive touchscreen users can select project information either via a 3-dimensional car in which each key component is visible, or by geographical locations in the EU.

    How to create impact from excellent science? That was the topic of the scientific conference, "Scientific Goverance: Excellence and Impact", organised by the JRC on Tuesday 15 October. Transforming science into concrete results is one of the key priorities of Horizon 2020, the EU research programme to boost science and innovation which will be launched in December this year.
