Networks & bureaus

To meet its objectives and deliver high-quality scientific support and results, the JRC has developed lasting partnerships with external entities sharing a common interest in specific research areas. This collaboration is essential for the JRC's work on harmonisation and validation of methods and measurements, establishing common standards, and providing scientific and technical support for the implementation of European legislation.

JRC's networking activities also respond to European policy makers' and EU Member States' increasing demands to establish common scientific reference systems. The JRC collaborates with hundreds of partner organisations in scientific networks worldwide, covering a broad range of fields from climate change and air quality to environmental monitoring of radioactivity and food contact materials.

  1. The JRC runs one of only two stations in Italy that measure air pollution within the framework of the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP). The JRC EMEP station monitors concentrations of carbon monoxide, ozone and secondary aerosol precursors and several physical and chemical parameters characterizing particulate matter.

  2. The European Soil Bureau Network's main tasks are to collect, harmonise, organise and distribute soil information for Europe.

  3. The Forum for Air quality Modelling (FAIRMODE) is a joint response action of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). Its aim is to bring together air quality modellers and users in order to promote and support the harmonised use of models by EU member countries, with emphasis on their application to the European Air Quality Directive.

  4. The specific objective of RALCEA is to foster information based policy and to promote south-south cooperation on capacity development in the water sector by supporting the development of a network of knowledge centres in Latin America.

  5. The Life Cycle Data Network is a web-based infrastructure giving access to quality assured data for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provided by different actors, such as industry, national LCA projects, research groups and consultants.

  6. The AQUILA Network, managed by the JRC ensures that air quality is measured in a coherent way in different counties and laboratories in Europe.

  7. The network of NEPAD Water Centres of Excellence (NEPAD Water CoE) is a network of higher education and research institutions that conduct high-end scientific research in water and related sectors in order to provide policy guidelines to governments.
